Here are some facts about whales🐋:
There are two types of whale: baleen and toothed. The key difference between them is the way they feed and what they have inside their mouths.
Baleen whales have baleen plates, or sheets, which sieve prey from seawater. Toothed whales have teeth, and they actively hunt fish, squid, and other sea creatures. Dolphins and porpoises all have teeth and, rather confusingly, are known as ‘toothed whales’ too!
Another obvious difference between baleen and toothed whales is the number of blowholes on top of their heads; baleen whales have two, whereas toothed whales have one. There are only 15 baleen whale species, and they are generally larger than the 77 species of toothed whales—except for the mighty sperm whale, the largest toothed whale.
The humpback whale is one of the largest animals on Earth, growing to lengths of 14–17 m (46–56 ft) and weighing up to 40 metric tons (44 short tons), and can live up to 80–90 years. Like whale sharks and basking sharks, they too filter feed for tiny krill or small pelagic fishes and are totally harmless to people. These whales are known for their singing that can be heard up to 20 miles away to attract females.
